Formula to Convert Gauss to Gamma
The Gauss is significantly larger than the Gamma. To convert from Gauss to Gamma, you multiply by 100,000.
The relationship is:
$$1 \text{ G} = 100,000 \gamma \quad (10^5)$$
$$B_{(\gamma)} = B_{(G)} \times 10^5$$
Example
Convert 0.5 Gauss (approximate Earth's magnetic field strength) to Gamma:
$$0.5 \text{ G} \times 100,000 = 50,000 \gamma$$
Conversion Table
| Gauss (G) | Gamma (γ) |
|---|---|
| 0.00001 G | 1 γ |
| 0.001 G | 100 γ |
| 0.01 G | 1,000 γ |
| 0.5 G | 50,000 γ |
| 1 G | 100,000 γ |
About the Units
The **Gauss (G)** is the CGS unit of magnetic flux density. The **Gamma ($\gamma$)** is a smaller unit used almost exclusively in geophysics to denote nanoteslas (1 nT). Because 1 Gauss equals 100,000 nT, it follows that 1 Gauss equals 100,000 Gamma.
